The instructor didn't lie to us. The swell is there, as is the sun and the waves are perfect for beginners. I would have put a swimsuit on but it seems that at the beginning you're in the water more than on the board so it's probably better to keep the wetsuit on. OK, let's go!
In Lacanau, in the Médoc, North Beach is a paradise for surfers. If you are part of the surfing tribe, each year, in August, this is "the place to be", where you can watch and meet the world's greatest surfers. Lacanau Pro is France's oldest surfing competition.
I wasn't lying when I told you that Aquitaine really is the surfing capital. You can even catch the waves on the Gironde estuary. At high tide the ocean goes back very far inland, creating the wave that pushes the river up against the current. The phenomenon is exceptional and is called a tidal bore. Can you believe this? You can stand on the wave for more than half a mile, a pretty unique experience for a surfer!
We really are all tiny when faced with the ocean. You'll have to paddle hard and get out to the line-up before you can ride the wave. Here we're next to the villa Bielza, the legendary beach of the Basque coastline is just behind the rocks, but today this is where you'll find the best swell.
So, you'd rather look like a surfer than spend hours being tossed about by the waves?! No problem, adopt their dress code, cool outfits, a cheerful, laid-back vibe, a colourful look and a very friendly demeanour. Several surf wear brands have set up in Aquitaine and have factory outlets.
