Get your trainers on, to cheer your favourite athletes on or get in on the action yourself! Well, if you’re surfing, you might want to leave them on the beach.
    Here’s the low-down on cycling, golfing, horse-riding, surfing, canoeing-kayaking, jogging, football and motor sports for a super sporting season in New-Aquitaine.

    CYCLING – On your bikes!

    The 104th edition of the Great Loop (The Tour de France) will spend 3 days in the Dordogne.
    In this, the year of the opening of the Lascaux International Centre of Parietal Art, the Tour de France will pay tribute to the great prehistoric sites with a planned passage through Montignac, the village that’s home to the Lascaux Cave.

    A quick look at the programme:
    On 11 July, departure for Périgueux-Bergerac via the Dordogne Valley, passing through Les Eyzies, Montignac and Lascaux.
    12 July, departure from the fortified town of Eymet, heading for Pau in the Pyrenees.
    Finally, on 13 July, the convoy will leave Pau for Peyragudes, where the finish will be decided at the altiport at the end of an 18% climb!

    There’s a chapel in the Landes devoted to cyclists. Notre Dame des Cyclistes has frequently featured on the route of this famous race. Amateurs and great cycling champions like Merckx and Luis Ocaña stop off to leave their vests to mark their visit. Lance Armstrong did likewise, however the International Cycling Union removed his further to his being stripped of his titles.

    The « Canal des deux mers », a new itinerary along the canal de Garonne and the canal du Midi, now listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and the « Vélodyssée », a well-blazed, safe route. It’s about 320 km long, running along the Atlantic coast from Lacanau to Hendaye.

    Come visit Pau, the horse lovers’ city
    The Haras national de Pau-Gelos riding school is like no other. Come and meet the horses (about a hundred work horses, pure-breds and race horses), find out about its history, horse-drawn carriages and those who work there. The Haras is open to the public, dispensing guided tours in French, English and Spanish all year round.

    The Pau racecourse, specialising since 1840 in show jumping, ranks second in France after Auteuil. The establishment boasts a panoramic restaurant and a training centre for some 20 trainers in charge of no fewer than 700 horses www.hippodrome-pau.com

    The Landes breed of ponies already existed alongside the Neanderthals. According to expert scientists, they date back to pre-historic times. It is they who are depicted in the Lascaux caves, not the Basque pottok as scientists used to think. The species is tending towards extinction: their docile nature will certainly be missed.

    AUTOMOBILE – It’s called « Baby Monaco »: the Circuit de Pau!

     

    This was where the first Formula 1 Grand Prix was held, long before the world championship was first organised. The 2,649 km route for the Grand Prix de Pau was built in 1933, making it the oldest racetrack in France.

    It’s the only urban racetrack in France to still host modern car races passing places of interest in the city: parc Beaumont, château de Pau, boulevard des Pyrénées.
