Bourg-en-Gironde is a village 40 kilometres north of Bordeaux, known for producing wines with a great balance of fruits and tannins: Cotes-de-Bourg. But the village and surrounding area have much more to offer than just a quick wine tasting. As you'll see...
Not far from the old wash-house, where the rows of windows produce entrancing patterns of light and shade, visit a real artist's studio, then climb the stairs to reach the romantic veranda of the tea room. Don't forget the Moorish-inspired villa, and the benches near the church which provide the perfect location to enjoy the magnificent sunsets with which the Gironde estuary is blessed.
Of course Bourg is also a port – the Ocean is 70km away, between Médoc and Saintonge - and a maritime atmosphere still survices on the quays, adding further to the charm of this special village.
The Tourist Information Centre has a number of suggested walks, hikes, tours etc., some featuring audio guides.
A weekend package is also available, including entrance to the prehistoric cave site at Pair-non-Pair (a small cave containing some superb sculptures), a wine tasting session and, of course, a night's stay + breakfast in a 2 or 3 Epis guest room, all for the unbeatable price of: €48 per person in a double room, €24 for kids under 12.
Between Blaye, the citadel of neighbouring Vauban, the many islands of the estuary, the Gallo-Roman villa at Plassac, the medieval 'Troque Sel' festival which takes place in early September… as you can see, it'll take more than a quick detour to really enjoy the many treasures of Bourg.
